History of Yodeling

A Brief History of Yodeling
Yodeling can be found all over the world and from many different cultures. You can hear yodeling in Europe, Africa, Hawaii and Mexican, to name a few. Many people do Alpine yodeling. Alpine or Swiss yodeling originates in Europe. Believe it or not, it was used as a way for goat herdmen to communicate with each other.

The American style of yodeling comes from both Europe and African influences. In the 1930′s, 40′s and 50′s, it gained great popularity. Artists including Elton Britt, Patsy Montana, Jimmie Rogers, Gene Autry, Slim Whitman and Hank Williams yodeled in many of their recordings.

I also really like the yodeling of Rosalie Allen. She is the first one that I listened to.

If you like yodeling you can hear me doing a combination of these great yodelers styles on my old cd as well as my new cd that will be released in October.

I owe so much to these great yodelers. They helped carry on a tradition that has continued into the 21st century. Without them………..I would never have been able to enjoy the blessing of learning to yodel.

Yodeling Lessons

I always get asked if I have had yodeling lessons. The answer is no. Quite frankly, I have never found anyone close to home who yodeled besides my Nana. You really don’t need yodeling lessons from a great yodeler. You just need to love yodeling. I have heard that you can either yodel or you can’t.

That may be true but I have heard alot of people yodel. Everyone sounds a little different and you just have to see which ones you like to listen to. The main thing is just to do it. I have a lot of friends who want me to work with them on yodeling and they love the idea but then when they start to do it they feel silly.

I guess yodeling is like anything else. If you want to be good you have to practice. It’s never felt like work to me because I just love to yodel.

Yod-el-a-e-o,

Yodeling and school!

Well today I’ve been learning about lipids, carbohydrates, proteins and the Civil War. Not to mention an anti virus flowchart I’ve been trying to figure out for algebra. But, I really like school this year.
I’m also taking music theory whch is very interesting.
I’ve been writing songs so now maybe I can start charting all the chords to go with them.
I love doing homeschool because I can yodel and sing while I do my work!
I’m trying to do extra work each day and then it will be smooth sailin’ on Friday when we go to Hatch, New Mexico.
WOW is this going to be a fun weekend in Hatch!
Peace,
Tiffany Jo
p.s. Looks like Katrina did not hit New Orleans at a category 5. Thank goodness, but it sounds like the damage is horrible anyway.

Hurricane Katrina

I am so concerned about this news. We have some homeschool friends in Tennessee who are bracing for the heavy rains. And, my friend Mel Tillis has a beautiful ranch in Florida. Hope he doesn’t get flooded.
It’s so amazing to have such sunny, cloudless skies in Arizona and have such a flurry of bad weather some place else. My prayers are with them.

Yodeling Practice

Well, I’m home after another awesome practice with my fellow musicians………..Jo Foster and John Payne.
My Nana Jo plays guitar with me and John, I call him Uncle John, plays bass.
We are working hard getting ready for our Hatch Chili Festival performance!
Have you ever been to Hatch? Let me know if you have.
I absolutely love chili peppers so I can’t wait!
We will be performing Saturday at 1:45 and Sunday at 1:00.
Please come……I’d love to see some of my friends there.
I’m also excited to perform Sat. night with one of my favorite western swing bands, The Desperados!!!
This is going to be the best weekend ever!!!
Later,
Tiffany Jo
